Chatiquette Guidelines for Chat RoomsBy Chatrooms.NET - 2009-11-10 Chatiquette is the etiquette (manners) expected in the online "Chat room" world. Just as in real life, there are some things that you do and some things that you don't do when chatting. Chat rooms usually have stringent rules that they require users to follow in order to maintain integrity and safety for their chatters. Chat rules usually do not allow users to use offensive language, or to promote hate mail, violence and other negative issues.
Right Things to do in a Chat Room * Always introduce yourself * Be polite * Be considerate of differing opinions * If answering a question, type the person's name before you answer, example: Bill, I agree with your comment but… * If you have to leave the chat for a short time, tell the others you will be away or set your chat session to 'away' * Make a positive contribution to the chat * Give thought to the persona you project * Say goodbye to chat users when leaving the room.
What NOT to do in a Chat Room * Don't use sarcasm - it may be misinterpreted. Remember that people cannot see your facial expressions in an online environment. * Don't reply to personal requests on the main chat screen - use Whisper mode * Don't type in ALL CAPITALS - it is called shouting and is considered to be rude * Don't use threatening, abusive, harassing, or defamatory language * Don't make statements that are sexually explicit or grossly offensive, including blatant expressions of bigotry, racism, hatred, or profanity * No unauthorized or unsolicited advertising (spamming) * Don't knowingly transfer of files that contain viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time bombs, or any other damaging software or programs. * Don't impersonate someone else * Don't falsely represent yourself * Don't promote or providing information about illegal activities * Don't indulge in activities that infringe upon anyone else's copyright(s) * Don't flood the chat room - the act of sending many messages in a brief period of time.
