FlashTime Video Chat for Adobe AIR 2.5

By ChatRooms.NET - 2010-07-20

According to the official Adobe Flash blog, FlashTime, P2P video calling app would be introduced by Adobe in Android 2.2 come their release of the AIR development platform.

It has been reported that Adobe has been hard at work preparing the next Adobe AIR release version 2.5, which is expected to support P2P a new video chatting application titled "FlashTime."

The Adobe Flash Platform is a complete system of integrated tools, frameworks, clients and servers for development of Web applications, content and video that runs consistently across operating systems and devices.

Adobe AIR, a key component of the Adobe Flash Platform, provides a consistent and flexible application development environment to deliver standalone applications outside the browser across devices and platforms. The platform is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux, and recently Adobe started a private beta test of AIR for Google Android. But work is already underway for Adobe AIR 2.5 for Android, which will apparently include all the same features as the desktop versions of AIR.

Flash Player is meant for mobile web applications that are delivered through a browser while Adobe AIR provides standalone web applications that live outside the browser and can function without a network or Internet connection.

As the release of Adobe AIR 2.5 looms, engineers have had time to devote to more ambitious elements that may or may not make it into the next build. One such feature is the so-called video chat “FlashTime,” which no doubt is a direct jab at Apple’s iPhone, the first handset to feature two-way video chatting via a front-facing camera through FaceTime.

The newest version of AIR features camera, microphone, StageWebView, and NativeExtensions, all functions that make P2P video chatting much easier to get working on the platform.

Since FlashTime is an AIR-based app, it could theoretically run on all platforms that support Adobe AIR, including Android phones and desktop computers.

Adobe Air is a very good platform to get more of the web working on mobile devices, and this will gives Android device users more access to web applications.

Now functional in the newest version of AIR is camera, microphone, StageWebView, and NativeExtensions, all making functions that make P2P video chatting that much easier to get working on the platform.
