GimpGirl Disability Community Chat Room

By Chatrooms.NET - 2009-11-22

The GimpGirl chat room is mainly used by women with disabilities to communicate online.

The GimpGirl Community (GGC, GimpGirl) was started in 1998 by Jen Cole (SL: JennyLin Arashi) and several other young women with disabilities who didn’t feel like there was a community out there that understood them and their needs.

Today GimpGirl members come together to share their lives, experiences, problems and successes, in a safe space that focuses more on the women they are, and less on what disabilities they have.

Members and chatters are valued and respected because of who they are, and that has always included women-identified people with disabilities of all shapes, sizes, and colors, not to mention ages and sexual orientations.

GimpGirl Community uses an IRC relay developed by Quickfox. (http://chat.on.quickfox.net/GimpGirl.) The IRC chat room receives the text as typed, and people visiting through IRC can also chat on Second Life. This way the chat room is at least minimally accessible to everyone.

To join the GimpGirl Community Chat Room visit www.gimpgirl.com/mod/resource/view.php?id=31, type in your name or nickname in the box that says "type_name_here" and then click the button that says "Connect". It will then take a moment or two to connect to the disability chat room.
