A green dot next to someone's name means that they're currently online and you can start a chat with them. A moon means that they haven't been online for at least 10 minutes.

You can select to appear offline to specific Friend Lists within Chat. Simply select the "Go Offline" toggle next to the top of each Friend List you would like to appear offline to. You will no longer appear as available to chat to people on these lists.

You can send messages to your Facebook friends even if they're not online. Click on the name of a friend in your list and leave them a message. They'll get the message when they're back online.

You can view recent conversation history by opening a chat window with your friend.
