Chit Chat for FaceBook Chatting from your Desktop

Facebook includes an awesome chat feature that lets you instantly start conversations with your Facebook buddies without installing any IM software but the only small issue is that you need to be on the Facebook.com website in order to use Facebook chat. But not anymore!

If Facebook were to develop a stand alone instant messenger service on the lines of Yahoo!, MSN Messenger, or the new Google Talk, it might look something like ChitChat.

For those of you who now use Facebook’s built-in IM as your primary choice for online chatting, you may be interested in Chit Chat, a desktop client for Facebook chat. Since this is desktop software, you can minimize the application out of your way but still get alerted to new messages as soon as they come through – even if you don’t have your web browser open to Facebook.com. Also, like most IM clients, Chit Chat saves your conversation history so you can pick up where you left off on your previous discussion.

The application is in release candidate (RC) stage so expect a few bugs, however they are fixed fast and updates are posted regularily.

Update: Chit Chat for Facebook 1.42 is a substantial upgrade of their popular Facebook login application launched just over a year ago.
