Skype Video Chat on FacebookBy ChatRooms.NET - 2010-11-29 There has been some recent speculation that Facebook chat might add Skype video chat functionality to their popular social networking website. Tal Alter from Green Any Site was working on a Facebook application when he came across an object in the Facebook site code called VideoChat. Aparently the object has several properties that refers to Skype or having the ability to chat with Skype users. With the code referencing Skype user IDs, it could suggest Facebook is building its own video chat program that may enable Facebook users to video chat with their Skype contacts. However, Skype is based on an encrypted, proprietary P2P protocol, which makes it difficult to place a call from a Skype client to a web browser. Tal found hooks for support in Internet Explorer, plugin support for ActiveX, and links for the Skype SDK. He also discovered Facebook is bucket testing this feature with certain groups of users - as the object wasn’t appearing every time Tal refreshed the page he was looking at. In September 2010 Skype and FaceBook joined forces by allowing the popular VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service to integrate with Facebook, and this was followed several weeks later by integration being added into the newest version of the Skype desktop client software.
