Company takes Yahoo to Court over Defamatory Chat Posts

A Chicago-based financial services company is petitioning Yahoo for information related to defamatory posts made about the company on a Yahoo chat board.

The company, which offers retails brokerage and investment banking services and to corporations and high net worth individuals, is seeking the identity of a users Yahoo email address, who posted the statement, as well as other relevant information from Yahoo.

According to the suit, filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court, false defamatory statements were made about the company on Yahoo's financial chat board on Nov. 9.

Previously a social networking Website demanded microblogging service Twitter and stock market message board IHUB reveal account information for users who called the social networking site a "fraud."

Both lawsuits cited Illinois Supreme Court Rule 224, which "provides a tool by which a person or entitty may, with leave of court, compel limited discovery before filing a lawsuit in an en effort to determine the identity of one who maybe be liable in damages".
